During this session, Chris Borg and Sarah Cassar Torregiani will provide a box-by-box overview of the VAT Return, with reference to the positions taken in the MIT Guide to Completing a VAT Return, and will discuss some practical examples and frequently asked questions. Chris Borg - Chris is a Certified Public Accountant with extensive experience and expertise in VAT and tax matters.Chris is responsible for the Indirect Tax service line of Deloitte in Malta, leading a team of dedicated professionals providing a wide range of indirect tax advisory and compliance services to the firm’s domestic and international clients.He is the chairperson of the Malta Institute of Taxation’s indirect tax technical committee. Chris is also a lecturer and examiner in VAT and Tax, including acting as examiner for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and as moderator of the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) offered by the UK-based Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). Furthermore, as chairperson of the Malta Institute of Taxation’s indirect tax technical committee, he acts as alternate representative on the European Commission’s VAT Expert Group and as representative on the Indirect Taxes Sub-Committee of CFE Tax Advisers Europe.
Sarah Cassar Torregiani - Sarah Cassar Torregiani is a lawyer who specialises in VAT.After 13 years with one of the Big Four accountancy firms, she has practiced on a freelance basis since 2015 providing technical support and advice on local and EU VAT matters as well as practical VAT training. Sarah is the Chief Technical Officer of the Malta Institute of Taxation and a member of the Indirect Tax Committee of the Institute. She has represented the Malta Institute of Taxation on the EU Commission’s VAT Expert Group since 2014.
Nico Sciberras - Certified Public Accountant – Engaged by the Office of the Commissioner for Revenue as a Technical Advisor specializing in VAT matters but also involved in direct tax matters. Nico forms part of a very experienced team dealing with legal and technical issues in the world of VAT both at a domestic and international level. His work ranges from the drafting, interpretation and implementation of VAT law, to assisting taxpayers and tax practitioners with technical/legal queries or confirmation requests as well as the training of staff forming part of the Office of the CfR. Nico also forms part of Malta’s representation at EU level which involves participation and contributions toward various important EU fora including the EU Council’s Working Party on Tax Questions (WPTQ), the VAT Committee, the Group For the Future of VAT, the EU VAT Forum, EU Fiscalis events, and TADEUS.
