MIT SHORT COURSE ON PERSONAL TAXATION

The MIT Short Course on Personal Taxation seeks to consolidate various aspects of Malta income tax in the context of individual tax payers, as well as social security and certain immigratory considerations. The lecturers, with numerous years of professional experience, will be covering topics which commence from the basis of taxation to individuals from a Malta income tax perspective and the charging provisions in terms of the Income Tax Act.Option to follow the full programme (12 lectures) or any lecture of interest. Lectures 3 & 4, Lectures 6 & 7 and Lectures 8 & 9 must be taken as a group (select from drop-down menu for participation fee).

  • ANNAMARIA MIFSUD - Annamaria is a Senior Manager in the PwC’s tax practice. She joined the firm’s assurance practice in 2006 after obtaining a degree in Accountancy from the University of Malta. She acquired four years of audit experience, including audit engagements at PwC Channel Islands and US offices.During 2010, Annamaria joined the Tax & Legal Services department at PwC and has since then been involved in assisting various individual and corporate clients with tax related matters. Annamaria’s main area of specialisation is in connection with the taxation of individuals and employment tax matters. She also obtained a diploma in taxation offered by the Malta Institute of Taxation and was seconded to the Tax Practice of PwC Portugal.
  • CHRIS CURMI - Chris joined the Deloitte’s International Tax function as a corporate and personal tax partner in 2005, following the merger of the audit and accounting firm Curmi, Paris, Scicluna & Co with Deloitte Malta effective from 1 January 2005. Chris was one of the founder partners of Curmi, Paris, Scicluna & Co and headed the firm’s international tax practice. Since 1990, Chris has specialised in international taxation and has advised clients on tax issues in respect of various cross-border structures including cross-border transaction advisory tax issues, corporate reorganisations, mergers and acquisitions, succession planning and expatriate taxation in Malta. He also heads the Family Office service offering within Deloitte Private. Chris is currently the leader of Global Employer Services Line and which incorporates personal taxation (including expatriate taxation) and immigration services.
  • CHRISTIAN VELLA - Chris is currently a manager within the direct tax advisory and compliance department at Deloitte Malta. Chris currently focuses mainly on tax advisory engagements mainly relating to shareholder restructuring exercises, mergers and acquisitions (including buyer / vendor due diligence engagements and transactions advisory) as well as tax structuring projects.Chris has successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation and currently delivers various seminars and lectures during accredited CPE events.
  • ELAINE MARIE DEBONO - Elaine is an ACCA qualified accountant with over 14 years of experience within the Tax sphere. Elaine joined one of the big-four firms as an ACCA student in 2008 and continued her career with Mazars in Malta as from 2014. Elaine assists clients with their statutory fiscal requirements within various sectors mainly the insurance, hospitality, retail, service, gaming and manufacturing industry. Elaine is presently involved in providing tax advice to both local and international on both corporate as well as personal clients.She also lectured the Advanced taxation module to students who are sitting for their ACCA exams and the Tax Compliance Diploma organised by the Malta Institute of Taxation.
  • JAMES BONAVIA - James joined Deloitte Malta in 2007 as a member of the International Tax team, specialising in international tax, due diligence assignments and cross border transactions. As of 2019, he now heads up the Global Employer Services Team in Malta. Prior to joining Deloitte James worked at another Big 4 firm where he managed direct and indirect tax compliance and tax advisory for a number of local and international companies besides handling a large portfolio of local personal and expatriate clients.James has lectured extensively in VAT in the Diploma in VAT Compliance, accredited by The Institute of Indirect Taxation (IIT) and in the Advanced Diploma in International taxation (ADIT), accredited by the Chartered Institute of Taxation (UK), both run by the Malta Institute of Management. He also lectured in direct taxation in the Diploma in Taxation run by the Malta Institute of Taxation. James has also taken part in numerous conferences in Malta and abroad. James was a contributor to the book “Principles of Maltese VAT Law” published by the Malta Institute of Management in 2009.Currently, James manages Global Employer Services at Deloitte Malta.
  • KENNETH CREMONA - Kenneth Cremona graduated with a Master in Accountancy from the University of Malta in 2015. Kenneth joined RSM Malta in 2016, initially working on Income Tax Compliance dealing with clients established in multiple industries including Gaming, Immovable Property, Investments, Pharmaceuticals and Retail. During 2019, he specialised in VAT advisory and was promoted to an Assistant Manager in 2021. Kenneth is also a CPA warrant holder and received the Professional Certificate in Taxation issued by the Malta Institute of Taxation in 2017.
  • MR LUCA PACE - Luca is a manager within Deloitte Malta’s tax practice, and forms part of the Global Employer Services team, which focuses on individual client tax requirements as well as on employer’s tax related matters in connection with their global workforces.Having joined Deloitte in 2015 upon successful completion of his studies, Luca spent a number of years within the international tax team, having been involved in a number of advisory engagements for clients across a number of industries, whilst specializing on automatic exchange of information.
  • REBECCA DIACONO - Rebecca Diacono is a Senior Associate working within the Tax & Immigration Law Department of Fenech & Fenech Advocates since 2014. Rebecca obtained her Doctor of Laws in 2016 and was admitted to the bar in 2017. She has also successfully completed the Malta Institute of Taxation Professional Certificate in Taxation (Cert. Tax) and was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Services.Rebecca advises a largely international clientele in matters of group restructuring, domestic and international taxation, cross-border structures and international tax planning. Rebecca also focuses on private wealth matters, assisting high-net worth individuals with their relocation to Malta, both from a tax and immigration perspective.
