The Malta Bankers’ Association was first established in May 1962 as a co-ordinating and lobbying body, for banks operating in Malta, on sectoral issues and policies. Membership in the Association is open to all banks licensed to operate in Malta, and all the banks which are so licensed are currently members of the Association. These include branches and subsidiaries of banks registered in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Turkey and the U.K.

The structure of the Association consists of a Board, which is primarily responsible for policy issues, two Executive Committees representing retail banks who offer / intend to offer their full range of services to the public at large within domestic retail market and all other banks whose business is predominantly international in scope, a full-time Secretariat, and various sub-committees and working groups which deal with specific business areas and issues. The Association is also represented on a number of National Joint Committees.

Following Malta’s Accession to the European Union in May 2004, the Association has applied for full membership of the European Banking Federation (FBE), of which it was previously an Associate Member. The FBE accepted the Association as a full member with effect from 1 July 2004.
